Set Assignment and Question Points

Each question on your assignment is assigned by default 1 point for each question part; question pools are assigned 1 point for each question used in the pool. The point value of the assignment is the sum of the points for each question part and question pool. If needed, change point values for question parts, questions, question pools, and the assignment.

Note This information describes how to use the new Assignment Editor.

If needed, click Try the New Assignment Editor in the original Assignment Editor to enable this improved experience now.

For example, these would be the default point values for an assignment with the following questions and question pools:

Question or Question Pool Points
1. Question with 1 part 1
2. Question with 4 parts 4
3. Question with 2 parts 2
4. Pool (use 3 of 7) 3
TOTAL 10

The total number of points for an assignment is important for your gradebook only if you weight assignments by points.

Best Practice Do not change assignments that your students are already working on. You are likely to cost your students points, submissions, or both. Instead, consider creating a copy of the scheduled assignment and making your changes to the copy.

If you must change a scheduled assignment, notify your students of the change and rescore the assignment. See Rescore Assignments.

Adding or removing questions or question pools changes the assignment points. Usually, you should do this before setting points.

Settings at the assignment level apply to all assignment questions except questions whose settings you specifically change in Questions. Question-level settings override assignment or template settings.
