Add an Assignment to Multiple Classes

Within Canvas you can now create an assignment for multiple classrooms at the same time through the external tool.

Quick Tutorial

If you are unfamiliar with how to make an assignment in Canvas, please see Add a Big Ideas Math Assignment to a Canvas Course.

If you cross-list in Canvas, you will still need to add the assignment to every section in Big Ideas Math on this page. If you attempt to assign to only 1 class in Big Ideas Math and change the assignees only on the Canvas side, then they will not be able to open it.

Follow the steps as you normally would when creating and adding an assignment through the Canvas External Tool until you get to this screen.

The Assign screen with a "What class would you like to add?" menu.
  1. Click the Add Class button, then check the boxes to the classes you wish to add the assignment to. Click All Students or individual students you need by class.
  2. Once the classes have been selected you can navigate between the different classes to manage the users and settings. Settings which can be applied to all classes are Date and Time, Submissions Options, Tools and Questions Options. Click the Assign button and this will now deep link that assignment to those classes in Canvas. You'll be taken back to the External Tool settings.
  3. In the External Tool Settings - The External Tool URL will be populated with a bigideasmath.com link. It is important to not modify that field or copy/paste it anywhere else. Students may encounter issues if you attempt to copy/paste or link the URL anywhere else than the default location we'll add it to in Canvas.
  4. Set Submission Attempts to Unlimited to allow syncing multiple times if you update any scores and choose an Assignment Group. This does not mean they can submit the assignment multiple times.
  5. It is also recommended to select Load this tool in a new tab.
  6. Then click either Save and Publish or Save depending on if you are ready for students to see the assignment.
  7. Do not modify the Assign section on this screen. Choosing which classes and users to assign to will be done on the assignment settings page in Big Ideas Math while creating the assignment.
