Create a Mastery Assignment

Use Mastery assignments to help your students understand new concepts. Mastery assignments consist of groups of questions related to a concept or skill, and are designed to encourage conceptual understanding. You can include up to 70 groups of questions in a single Mastery assignment, and the numbers and chemical systems in each question are randomized.

  1. From the Assignments page, click Create Assignment.

    Be sure you're in the correct course and section.

  2. Click Mastery > Continue.
  3. Enter the assignment information.
    1. Enter the Assignment Name.
    2. Set the date and time for Assignment Available On.
    3. Optional: Set the date and time for Assignment Due On.
    4. Optional: Allow students to access the assignment after the due date has passed.

      Clear Same as Due Date, and set a later date and time for Assignment Unavailable On.

    5. Optional: Apply a late penalty to assignments submitted after the due date.

      Select Penalty for submissions after due date, and set the percentage of the penalty. All date and time fields must be complete before you can set a late penalty.

  4. Set Allow students to use this assignment for practice?

    The default setting allows students to use the assignment for practice once it is unavailable for grading.

    • To prevent students from using the assignment for practice, clear Yes, but only after the available date.
    • To allow students to use the assignment for practice after making their final submission, select And yes, immediately after their final submission of the assignment for grading.
  5. Click Continue.
    The Available Groups page opens and lists the available content sources.
  6. Use the + buttons to view the available content, and select the chapters you want to use. You can select multiple chapters.
  7. Click Continue.

    The Included Groups page opens.

  8. To add a group to the assignment, click and drag the group from Available Groups to Included Groups.

    To add all available groups to the assignment, click Include All.

    Note To open an interactive preview of the group, click the group.
  9. Optional: To change the number of points that can be earned from a group, or the number of questions students must answer correctly to earn points from a group, click Edit Details.
  10. Click Continue.

    The Assignment Options page opens.

  11. Set the assignment options.
    If you previously saved assignment settings, you can find them under Apply Option Set. Some settings are assignment specific and will still need to be set.

    Prevent students from accessing your assignment before completing a previous assignment Set Prerequisite options.
    1. Specify if the condition is based on points or percentage.
    2. Choose the required assignment.
    3. Set the required score.
    Specify how the assignment is graded

    Set Grading options.

    Possible Score
    Set the highest possible point value of the assignment. This can be a specific number or not graded.
    Pass/Fail at
    If the assignment is graded on a curve, set the percentage students must earn in order to pass the assignment.
    Extra Credit
    Select Yes if the assignment counts as extra credit.
    Allow/restrict eBook and resource links Set Resource Availability options. Allow or restrict access to resources during the assignment.
    Set the number of times students may try a group

    Set the Group attempt limit. Each time a student tries a group of questions, their current answers are cleared and the question variables are reset.

    Allow/restrict feedback during the assignment Set Feedback during Assignment options to determine if and when students receive hints, feedback, and error detection.
    Allow/restrict feedback after the assignment Set Feedback after Assignment options to determine if and when students can view their overall assignment score, question details, responses, question scores, correct answers, and feedback.
  12. Optional: Once all settings are configured, you can save your settings to use for future assignments. Click Save As New Set, name the set, and click OK.
  13. Click Save Changes.

    Your assignment information displays.

Your new assignment is added to your Assignments page.
