Exercises

The following are different types of exercises in Keyboarding in SAM:

Exercise Description
Warmup Reviews new key reaches from previous lessons. You key each line once for practice and once for speed; GWAM display after the second attempt.
Learn Keys Hand Animation The Keyboarding Animations demonstrate the proper key reach and techniques while enabling you to practice what you are learning. You cannot use the Backspace key. You can attempt these tasks as many times as you want to properly learn the key reaches.
Learn Keys Reinforces proper posture and technique, demonstrates the proper reach and enables students to practice. You need to key the lines correctly. If you make a mistake, the correct reach flashes on screen until you make the correct reach. You cannot use the Backspace key.
All Reaches Learned Part 1 Presents drill lines that reinforce the new keys students have learned. All Reaches Learned Part 1 displays one word at a time and then each letter is checked as you key it. If you make an error, the word is erased so that you can key it again. Backspace is not allowed for the first line.
All reaches Learned Part 2 In All Reaches Learned Part 2 the entire drill line is displayed and backspace is allowed unless turned off by the instructor. If you do not meet the accuracy requirement on the first try you will be forced to retry. If the accuracy requirement is not met on the second try you can retry or move on.
Practice Keying Provides practice keying from the textbook. Instructors can set the preference to let the program display the text on screen or have you key text from the textbook; key from the screen is the default. GWAM and errors are reported.
Improve Keystroking Provides practice on specific reaches and techniques. The activity encourages you to key accurately. If you make an error, the program erases the whole word so that you can key it again. You have three opportunities to key the lines correctly. You cannot use the Backspace key.
Develop Skill Develop fluency and speed. After keying the line or paragraph once, key the same copy at or above your goal rate, which is two GWAM above the first attempt. Drill lines must meet or exceed the accuracy requirements to be included in the average speed calculation. You can attempt tasks as many times as you want even if you complete the tasks correctly.
Timed Writing - Inside Lesson Measures accuracy for a timed writing. Can be 30 seconds, or 1-5 minutes. After the time elapses, the errors are highlighted and GWAM is reported for Speed Emphasis. For Accuracy emphasis, GWAM, number of errors, and accuracy percentage will be reported. You have an opportunity to retry the Timed Writing and the five most recent attempts are recorded. You must meet accuracy requirement to complete the exercise correctly. You can attempt tasks as many times as you want even if you complete the task correctly.
Timed Writing - Outside Lesson Measures accuracy for a timed writing. Can be 30 seconds, or 1-5 minutes. All Timed Writings outside of the lessons have an Accuracy Emphasis. After the time elapses, the errors will be highlighted and the GWAM, number of errors, and accuracy percentage display. You have an opportunity to retry the Timed Writing and the five most recent attempts are recorded. You must meet accuracy requirement to complete the exercise correctly.
Keyboard Mastery Helps relax and get you focused by warming up. The Backspace key is not available for the first two lines but may be on the last two lines depending on the Preference settings. If you do not meet the accuracy requirement on the first try you will be forced to retry. If the accuracy requirement is not met on the second try you are given the option to retry or move on.
Improve Technique Encourages accuracy. As soon as you make an error, the simulation deletes the error and you can try again. You have three opportunities to key the word correctly before moving on with the drill line. The Backspace key is not allowed.
Skill Building: Sentences (Speed) A series of four sentences reinforce the goal of speed. You establish a base keying rate by keying a one-line sentence as many times as possible for 30 seconds. If you meet the accuracy requirement, you are challenged to increase you speed by two GWAM on the same sentence. You can continue to build speed as many times as desired. Number of errors and GWAM is reported.
Skill Building: Sentences (Accuracy) In Accuracy lessons, you key one sentence for the specified amount of time while making no more errors than the error allowance. If you do not exceed the error allowance requirement, you are challenged to key the sentence again with fewer errors. If you key with no errors, you are challenged to try again with zero errors at or above your last speed. Number of errors, GWAM, CWAM and Goal CWAM are reported.
Skill Building: Paragraphs (Speed) Paragraphs provide practice increasing either speed or accuracy on longer copy. In Speed lessons, you establish a base keying rate by keying the first paragraph for the specified time limit. If you meet the accuracy requirement, you are challenged to increase your speed by two GWAM on the same paragraph. Number of errors and GWAM is reported.
Skill Building: Paragraphs (Accuracy) In Accuracy lessons, you key one paragraph for the specified time limit while making fewer errors than the Error Allowance. If you make six or fewer errors that do not exceed the error allowance, you are challenged to key the paragraph again with fewer errors. If you key with no errors, you are challenged to try again with zero errors at or above their your last speed. Number of errors, GWAM, CWAM and Goal CWAM are reported.
Skill Building Measurement You key two paragraphs with no more than the specified amount of uncorrected errors. The activity is the same regardless of speed or accuracy emphasis. If there are too many errors, the program indicates too many errors and requires students to try again. GWAM, number of errors, and accuracy percent are reported.
Skill Building Quick Review Reinforces nine specific techniques or reach types. You are challenged to key the same line at or above the goal rate. If you do not meet the accuracy requirement on your first try you will be forced to retry. If the accuracy requirement is not met on the second try you can retry or move on. GWAM is reported.
Drill Practice Provides drills to correct reach deficiencies such as adjacent keys, concentration, direct key reach, repeating letters, and keys specific to certain fingers or rows. You type one drill line two times and must type with less than the number of errors set in the Preferences. GWAM and number of errors are reported.
