Post-Lab Assignments
After the lab is finished, every student should complete a post-lab assignment that both reinforces the lessons learned in the lab and assesses students' understanding of the material individually. Post-lab assignments should not be available to students until after the lab period is over.

When you have scheduled more than one assignment to a section with the exact same due date and time, you can change the order in which those assignments are listed.

Disable Automatic Extensions for Individual Assignments
If you have automatics extensions enabled for your class, you can disable them for individual assignments. This is useful for quizzes or other assessments.
Rescore Assignments
Your students' work on assignments is scored automatically when they submit it using the assignment's Scoring Answers setting. This behavior ensures that your students' assignments are scored correctly based on the assignment your student completed. However, you might need to occasionally rescore an assignment. When an assignment's Scoring Answers setting is set to Last , you can rescore the assignment to use the best answer for each question part instead of scoring using the last submission. When an assignment's Scoring Answers setting is set to any value other than Last , you can only rescore the assignment using your current setting for the assignment.
Relative Dates on the Reschedule Assignments Page
On the Reschedule Assignments page, changed due dates are rescheduled based on the day of the week, and other assignment date changes are made relative to the due date. These changes could have small impacts on how dates are recalculated if you copy rescheduled assignments from one section to another. Always review and update scheduling for assignments that have been copied from another section.
Add Questions from Public Collections to Assignments
Add questions to your assignments from the publicly available question collections. Question collections include questions contributed by other WebAssign instructors and are organized by subject classification.
Rescore Assignments That Have a Changed Question
If you need to change a question that you have already scheduled in an assignment — for example, to correct your answer or allow alternative correct responses — rescore assignments containing the question after you save it. For LMS-integrated courses, a rescore also syncs scores to your LMS. Rescoring is faster than a manual sync because it syncs only the rescored assignments.
Schedule Assignments for Multisection Courses
Generally, when you schedule assignments for multisection courses, you first schedule the assignments you want to a single section and then add new sections to your course. Each new section copies the original section.
Add Questions to Assignments Using Question IDs
Add questions to your assignments using the question ID (QID), if known. This lets you add questions that other instructors have shared with you by giving you the question ID.
Set Accommodations for Timed Assignments

While your students are in the lab, they will need to create a lab report as a group that records their data and shows the results of some analyses.
Assignment Restrictions
You can add security and time restrictions to an assignment, require students to pass one or more prerequisite assignments before starting work on an assignment, or schedule an assignment to be completed as group work.
Delete an Assignment
Trash an assignment if you do not want it to be shown in your assignment lists or available for scheduling or editing. Assignments cannot be permanently deleted.
Add Course Pack Assignments

Pre-Lab Assignments

Excuse Students from Assignments
You can excuse a student from an assignment. When you do so, they receive no points for the assignment. The lack of points does not factor into their class grade or the GradeBook in any way. It is as if the student was never scheduled to take that assignment.

Drop Specific Assignments from GradeBook

Schedule a Password Protected Assignment
To ensure that your students complete a quiz or test only in your classroom or another proctored environment, you can require your students or a proctor to type a password when opening the assignment. The assignment password is the same for all your students, and is different from your students' account passwords.
Print an Assignment
You can print an assignment by clicking Print Assignment at the top of the Assignment page. Using Print Assignment formats the assignment to remove buttons and line breaks, and often prints using less paper than just using Print on your Web browser.

Assignment Time Estimates
Assignment times are the estimated amount of time a student spent online working on assignments. Assignment time estimates can be viewed on the Scores pages.

Set how assignment questions and question parts are submitted and scored and select the gradebook category for the assignment. Optionally, configure bonus or penalty points, allow students to show their work, or override the recommended tolerance or significant figures behaviors.

Each question on your assignment is assigned by default 1 point for each question part; question pools are assigned 1 point for each question used in the pool. The point value of the assignment is the sum of the points for each question part and question pool. If needed, change point values for question parts, questions, question pools, and the assignment.

You can change the dates for a scheduled assignment without leaving the Schedule page.
Cannot Apply Assignment Template
In the Assignment Templates Manager , you cannot select some assignments when applying or updating a template.

You can upload scores to your GradeBook from a file for assignments your students completed outside of WebAssign.
Set Assignment and Question Submissions
Set the number of allowed submissions for the assignment. If needed, override the allowed submissions for specific questions, question parts, or question pools, depending on how you allow students to submit answers.
Cannot Submit Assignment
When you attempt to submit an assignment, WebAssign indicates that the assignment is past due, even though your clock indicates that it is not yet time for the assignment to be due.
Enter or Upload Assignment Scores to GradeBook
Scores for assignments completed in WebAssign are automatically added to the GradeBook per your GradeBook settings. You can also add assignment scores to your GradeBook for work completed outside of WebAssign, such as independent research or a paper-based test.

Assignment Score
The Current Score at the top of the assignment displays the number of points you have earned followed by the number of points possible for the assignment.

Change Assignment Behaviors for a Section
If needed, you can change some WebAssign assignment behaviors in your class settings. This lets you use the same assignments for different classes with different behaviors in each class. For example, you might give partial credit for correctly specifying units in a physics survey course, but not give partial credit for units in an introductory course for physics majors.

Change Available and View Until Dates for an Assignment
When scheduling an assignment, the Available and View Until dates are set by default to the start and end of the course. If needed, you can change either of these dates or the rule on which each date is based.
Calendars
When an instructor schedules an assignment, it is automatically displayed on your calendar. Your calendar shows all of your assignments on their due dates. It also shows class start and end dates.
Due Date Changes Unexpectedly for Timed Assignment
If you started a timed assignment and your instructor granted you extra time, the assignment due date changes until you resume work on the assignment.
Set Per-Category Extension Policies
When you enable automatic or manual extension requests for your class, you can also set different policies for specific assignment categories. For example, you might allow automatic extensions for homework, manual extensions for lab assignments, and no extensions for quizzes and tests.

The Scores page for an assignment is a snapshot of the progress your students have made on a specific assignment right now.

You can allow your students to request manual extensions from their assignments in WebAssign. You must approve and set the terms for each granted extension.
Cannot Change Your Answers Even Though You Have More Submissions
For some assignments, after submitting one or more answers, you cannot change your answer again, even though you have more submissions and the assignment deadline has not passed.
Drop Lowest Assignment Scores from GradeBook
You can drop each student's lowest assignment scores in an assignment category from GradeBook calculations. For example, you can drop each student's lowest two quiz scores.
Download Assignment Scores and Statistics
You can download a report of each student's assignment scores for one or more sections of a course.
Get an Automatic Extension
Your instructor might let you have an automatic extension of the due date for some assignments in WebAssign.
Cannot Add Question to Assignment
You cannot update your assignment after adding an inline tutorial question or a mastery set.
Change Assignment to Extra Credit
You can change an assignment to be worth extra credit in GradeBooks that are based on points only.

Limit Feedback
For assignments composed of multiple-choice questions — for example, an in-class chapter review — you can encourage rich debate by limiting students' feedback so they do not know which questions they have answered correctly.
Ask Your Instructor for an Extension
Your instructor might let you ask for a manual extension of the due date for some assignments in WebAssign. If so, your instructor will review your request and decide whether or not to give you more time.
View All Students' Scores for a Single Assignment
You can identify students who might need extra help with the course material by reviewing individual assignment scores.
Assign Roles
For assignments that require the group to work through a process together to answer each question, you should define roles and let your students make only a few (3-5) submissions.
Group Work
Group work helps both to foster working together and problem-solving skills, and to provoke discussion of the subject matter. Questions on group assignments should be more challenging than homework questions, and often require students to synthesize the concepts they have learned or to apply concepts in novel ways.

You can get an impression about how a student is doing in your class by reviewing their assignment scores. You might want to do this before meeting with the student or deciding whether or not to grant an extension for an assignment.
Ask for More Time or Submissions
If your instructor allows you to request more time or more submissions for an assignment, a Request Extension link is displayed in the assignment.
Unschedule an Assignment From the Schedule Page
If you accidentally schedule the wrong assignment, you can unschedule it without leaving the Schedule page. You can also unschedule the assignment from all sections.
View Student Answer Distribution for an Assignment
You can see the number and percentage of students in your class selecting each answer provided for questions on your assignment.
Copy Section Schedule to Other Sections
You can copy the assignment schedule from one section into other sections in the same course.
Question Pools
A question pool is a list of questions from which a specified subset of questions are randomly selected for each student's assignment. You can use question pools to give your students several different versions of the same assignment.
View a Student's Answers for an Assignment
You can see a student's answers on an assignment if needed to review the student's work or respond if a student believes that a question has been scored incorrectly.
Submit Your Answers
You must submit your answers to assignment questions to receive credit. How you submit answers depends on the Assignment Submission rule displayed at the top of your assignment.
Ask Your Teacher for Help With a Question
You can send an Ask Your Teacher message to your instructor for any assignment question.
Scores and Answers
You can easily track your students' progress. You can see your students' scores and their work on assignments before or after the assignment is due. This way you can see how they are progressing or how they have done on past assignments — for individual students or for the whole class. ScoreView scores are raw scores and does not take category weighting into account. Within ScoreView you can get detailed analysis of assignments, whole course, or individual students' progress.
View Your Previously Submitted Answers
If viewing your previous answers is enabled for an assignment, you can see your previous answers to a question.

Advanced Mode Automatic Point Adjustments Can't Be Updated for an Assignment Template
When editing automatic point adjustments for an assignment template, the conditional points formula in advanced mode can't be updated. Clicking Update has no effect.

Your students' assignment scores are a proxy for their understanding of the material and the effort they are making to learn. WebAssign provides a number of ways to review student scores on assignments.
What Does a Red Asterisk Mean?
A red asterisk generally indicates an override of some kind. Examples include score overrides, due date extensions, and dropped assignments. It can also indicate a non-WebAssign assignment.
Questions Submission Rule
If the Assignment Submission rule at the top of your assignment reads For this assignment, you submit answers by questions, the number of submissions for each question is counted independently. The number of submissions remaining changes only if you submit a new or changed answer.

How Lowest Scores Are Calculated
When dropping a student's lowest scores from a GradeBook category average, the scores dropped are those scores that, if dropped, would result in the highest category score for the student. These might not necessarily be the assignments with the lowest percentage scores or the lowest point scores.
Enable Automatic Extensions for Your Class
You can set up an automatic extension policy for your class, for example, to always allow students a single extension per assignment with a 30% penalty. You can grant extensions manually even if you turn on automatic extensions.
Ask Your Teacher Messages
Your students can send Ask Your Teacher messages about specific questions in their assignments. Each message includes the student's version of the assignment question and their current answers so you can read the message in context.
Set Student Feedback Settings by Question
Add a custom hint for any question in the assignment. You can also override your assignment settings to make Help Content or Practice Another Version available earlier for certain questions.
Mastery Sets
Include mastery sets in your assignment to give students the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of a key concept.
Open Student View
When you create a course or assignment, you can mimic the student experience by opening the Student View. This is a great way to review your course and test its assignments.
Answer Scored Tutorial Questions
Tutorial questions have multiple parts that are completed sequentially to help you work through learning a concept. Scored tutorial questions are displayed in your assignment and count toward your assignment score.

Answer Keys
Depending on how your instructor set up the assignment, you might be able to see answer keys indicated with the key icon in the assignment. The answer key indicates a correct answer provided by the question, but might not be the only acceptable answer.
Create Student Groups for Course
If you want to assign your students group work in WebAssign, you can either create different student groups for each assignment, or you can create one set of student groups for your class to use for all of your group assignments.
WebAssign in Science Labs
Although science labs are group activities by nature, your students should come to each lab having individually prepared by reading the assigned information about equipment, safety procedures, and the course materials. And, your students must individually be able to synthesize what they learned from the experiments performed with their lab groups. For this reason, the lab work for WebAssign is often best assigned in three parts: a pre-lab assignment, a group in-lab assignment, and a post-lab assignment.

You can view your scores and grades for previous assignments, as well as the scores you have for assignments you are currently working on.

From time to time, WebAssign provides updated versions of existing questions to provide enhanced functionality or enriched content or to correct a problem.
Take Proctored Exams Through Your LMS
If you use an LMS like Blackboard, Canvas, or Moodle, your instructor can administer exams through the LMS with a proctoring service. Proctoring services ensure academic integrity in multiple ways and often block you from opening any new tabs while taking your test.
Extensions
You can grant extensions to give your students more time to complete their work in WebAssign. You also have the option to set up automatic extensions or disallow extension requests for specific classes or assignment categories.
View Instructor Comments for Show My Work
After you show your work on an assignment, your instructor or a TA can change the score or add comments and files to help you better understand the material. Review these comments when studying for a quiz, test, or examination.
Show My Work
Enable Show My Work on an assignment to let your students explain the reasoning behind their answers, or require students show their work for certain questions.
Points Adjustment
Use automatic points adjustment to provide incentives that encourage or discourage student behaviors—for example, guessing or procrastination. You can also make specific assignment questions count as extra credit.
Additional Submissions
When you respond to extension requests, you have an option that is not available in an automatic extension policy: you can give your students more submissions for the assignment. You might choose to do this if, for example, the assignment is more difficult for your students than you expected.
Graphing Questions
Plot figures on the Cartesian coordinate plane. Your graph is scored automatically by WebAssign when you submit the assignment for grading.
Worked Solutions
Some questions provide a worked solution that shows how the correct answer is obtained. Depending on how your instructor set up the assignment, the solution might be shown only after the assignment due date is passed, or after you have used all of your submissions. The solution cannot display without the answer key, nor can it display before the answer key, whether or not the answer has been submitted multiple times.
Essay Questions
Enter your response in the box provided. After your instructor grades essays, your scores and instructor comments are displayed on the assignment, if enabled.
Grant Manual Extension Requests
When your students request a manual extension within the assignment, you receive a manual extension request notification in WebAssign. You can grant the request and set the duration, penalty, and any extra submissions to allow for the extension.
Remove Questions from a Question Pool
You can remove questions from an existing question pool without removing them from the assignment. If you remove all questions from the question pool, the pool itself is removed.
Question Feedback
After you submit a question, question part, or assignment, you usually receive feedback on your answers. This feedback might be a mark indicating whether or not you answered a question correctly, or it might include information to help you understand the problem. After the due date, you might see the answer key or a worked solution to the problem. Use this feedback as an opportunity to learn, and if you have more time and submissions, to change your answers on questions that you missed.

Remove Questions from a Mastery Set
You can remove questions from an existing mastery set without removing them from the assignment. If you remove all questions from the mastery set, the set itself is removed.
