Group work helps both to foster working together and problem-solving skills, and to provoke discussion of the subject matter. Questions on group assignments should be more challenging than homework questions, and often require students to synthesize the concepts they have learned or to apply concepts in novel ways.
Two different methods have been shown to encourage rich discussions when students are working in groups: limiting feedback and assigning roles.
